From the stunning beauty of Ha Long Bay to sandy white beaches and historical temples, this coastal province in northeastern Vietnam has plenty to offer.
Journey through the bay
The beauty of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Ha Long Bay is best explored on a cruise through its mystical landscape of limestone islands and islets. Board a luxury sailboat to journey around the bay and perhaps also explore the lesser-known (but no less breath-taking) Lan Ha Bay. Along the way, hop on a kayak or boat through stalagmite caves to discover hidden lagoons and dip in their cool, clear waters.
Alternatively, take to the skies on a seaplane tour and enjoy an aerial view of the bay’s famous limestone formations, tranquil fishing villages and floating markets. These planes are typically small and intimate, making them perfect for couples or small groups.
Soak up some sun
A short ride from Cai Rong Harbour lies Co To Island, one of Vietnam’s most underrated gems, where pristine beaches of white sand are surrounded by azure waters. Popular spots for sunbathing and swimming include Tinh Yeu Beach, Hong Van Beach and Van Chai Beach.
In contrast to the rest of the island’s sandy beaches, Cau My beach on the island’s southern tip boasts dramatic cliffs of stratified rock in colourful hues, shaped by the relentless pounding of waves and the passage of time.
Meanwhile, the Co To Lighthouse is also a worthy landmark to visit – this watchtower perched high on a hill was built in the 19th century.
Indulge in local specialties
Seafood is a staple in the Quang Ninh province, thanks to the rich bounty of coastal harvest. A must-try local dish is cha muc, a fried squid cake made from ground squid meat that is crispy on the outside, but soft and chewy on the inside. Another famous dish is bún bề bềe, a seafood noodle soup with rice noodles and a tasty broth made from shrimps, mantis shrimps, pork bones and crab.
For a fun side activity, try squid fishing and see for yourself how ingredients are sourced from ocean to table. Often held after dark, green flashlights are used to draw schools of squid around the boat.
Admire historical monuments
Quang Ninh is home to a number of historical sites, including Quan Lan Temple, one of the oldest temples in the province. Here, devotees worship Buddhist deities as well as Lý Anh Tông, a Vietnamese king of the Ly dynasty who established the ancient trading port of Van Don in the 11th century.
Another must-visit destination is Yen Tu Mountain, home to a complex of Buddhist monuments, temples, shrines, and stupas, some of which are over 700 years old. To reach the summit, pilgrims take up to six hours traversing a path comprising thousands of stone steps, to arrive at the magnificent Dong Pagoda, cast entirely in bronze and perched 1,068m above sea level. Alternatively, an easier way to the peak is by aerial tramway.
Have fun as a family
Spend a fun-filled day at Sun World Ha Long Complex, a massive amusement park comprising two main areas: the Coastal Amusement Park on Bai Chay Beach, and the Amusement Park on Ba Deo Hill, both connected by cable car.
Adrenaline junkies can make a beeline for Dragon Park, which features a variety of thrilling rides and rollercoasters. Meanwhile, those who prefer a more laid-back experience can visit the peaceful Zen Garden, where visitors can relax and unwind amid a traditional Vietnamese garden. End the day with a stroll on Koi Bridge, or ride the giant Ferris Wheel for incredible sunset views of Ha Long Bay.
